Crunchy Caterpillars

Children will need help from an adult! Don't forget to drink water while you hike.

Yield: 1 serving

Serving Size: 1 crunchy caterpillar

Prep Time: 15 minutes

Ingredients:

  • Circular slices of your favorite round vegetables. (Try circular slices of carrots, cucumbers, zucchini, or small mushrooms with the stems removed.)

Equipment:

  • Knife
  • Toothpick, coffee-stir straw, or coffee-stir stick
  • Zip-top bags
Nutritional Information will vary depending on ingredient selection.

Directions:

  1. Place the veggie slices on the toothpick, stir straw, or stir stick. Be sure to alternate colors to create the caterpillar’s stripes.
  2. After creating the caterpillar’s stripes, attach a cherry tomato to the end of the toothpick, stir straw, or stir stick so that the caterpillar has a head.

To Serve:

  • Pack individual caterpillar servings in zip-top bags so that it doesn't crawl away.

Fun Fact: These caterpillars are tasty on or off the trail. Grab a parent and make giant caterpillars using skewers and grill for a tasty dinner side dish!
